Wareham, E. Wareham, W. Wareham and Onset

The village of Onset has a long and interesting history as a travel destination. In the middle of the 19th century, Onset began to gain attention as a resort getaway from the city. Steamboat ferries would stop at the village along a route that included New Bedford, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Hotels, restaurants, dance halls and theaters cropped up to cater to restless vacationers. This fun, carefree atmosphere prevailed in Onset until the 1930s, when widespread use of the automobile took travelers to more distant destinations. For many years, Onset was without its tourist population. In recent years, however, the village has received renewed attention as one of Cape Cod’s most serene destinations.

Today, families appreciate Onset’s sandy beaches, quaint town pier and the many water activities available, including canal cruises, whale watching, kayaking and canoeing.

In Wareham, locals enjoy more than 50 miles of coastline along bays, streams, lakes and ponds. With the abundance of waterways, boating and fishing activities are popular forms of recreation. A full-service marina located on the river provides access to Buzzards Bay and Martha’s Vineyard. There are also scenic beaches such as Onset Beach, a sandy stretch that is ideal for picnicking. The town maintains two beautiful semi-private beaches (resident sticker required) as well as public boat ramps. During the summer Wareham also hosts the Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League (which attracts top college players from all over the country) providing top-notch play all summer long. Additional attractions in the region include a water park and family fun center in East Wareham. As home to the Ocean Spray Co-op Wareham is also known as the “Cranberry Capital of the World”, with much of the town given over to cranberry farming on what are known as cranberry “bogs”, which can be found all over town providing picturesque views and excellent wildlife habitat.

Golf is available in both Wareham and Onset. In Wareham, the Little Harbor Country Club is an excellent 18-hole public facility with a par-3 layout very popular with seniors. Onset is home to the Bay Pointe Country Club, a well-regarded, semi-private course whose new owners have done a fantastic job of upgrading the facility.

The Wareham climate is characterized by crisp, cool winters, damp springs and warm summers. Temperatures range from highs in the [low-] 80s in July to lows in the low-20s in January. Annual precipitation averages about 50 inches, with the heaviest rainfall usually occurring in March. Wareham has a town meeting form of government with a town manager to administer day to day affairs.
